The Role and Duty of the Commissioner of Police:
Commissioner of Police is the chief of Bangalore City Police. He is in command of the entire City Police Force with regard to all matters of Police functioning. The Commissioner of Police is of the rank of Additional Director General of Police and he is assisted by two Joint Commissioners of police of the rank of Inspector General of Police and two Additional Commissioners of Police of the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police and 15 Deputy Commissioners of police of the rank of Superintendents of Police. There are jurisdictional Deputy Commissioners of Police in charge of specified zones and functional Deputy Commissioners of Police in charge of specilised functions such as Administration, Crime, Security, Intelligence etc.

The Commissioner of Police is also the Foreigner's Registration Officer.

In his capacity as the District Magistrate he is empowered to act as the licensing authority in respect of arms licenses and matters concerning public amusement. He also exercises powers under the Criminal Procedure Code regarding regulation and prohibition of assembly of persons etc, and detention of persons to prevent breach of public order under special legislation. He generally reports to Government through the Director General of Police.

Joint Commissioner Of Police:

The Role and Duty of the Joint Commissioner of Police:
He is the second in command of Bangalore City police next in hierarchy to the commissioner. He is in charge of all matters pertaining to traffic in Bangalore City. He is assisted by the Deputy commissioner of Police (Traffic). He looks after the traffic management in the city. The Traffic Training Institute, (TTI), Traffic warden oranisations and activities concerned with SARS (Student's Association for Road Safety), besides publicity, planning, ambulances, towing vehicles etc are under the direct charge of the Joint Commissioner. He also coordinates with the zonal Deputy Commissioner's of Police in the matter of dealing with the underworld criminals and the welfare of police personnel. He will also assist the Commissioner of Police in discharge of responsibilities in all police matters in the city.

Joint Commissioner Of Police (Crime):

The Role and Duty of the Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime):
Joint Commissioner of police (Crime) is in charge of all crime matters emerging from the Police stations. He supervises prevention and detection of crime in all the Police stations and give necessary instructions to all the concerned officers. He supervises the working of City Crime Branch (CCB), City Crime Records Bureau (CCRB), the photography section and the Finger print unit of the commissionerate. He supervises the work of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) and all zonal Deputy Commissioners of Police with regard to crime matters. Supervision of squads specially formed for prevention of crime, disputes relating to land grabbing etc.

Additional Commissioner Of Police (Administration):

The Role and Duty of the Additional Commissioner of Police (Administration):
Additional Commissioner of Police (Administration) looks after the administration of the office of the Commissioner of Police. He co-ordinates the work of all branches in the office of the Commissioner of Police.
He is assisted by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Administration

Additional Commissioner Of Police (City Armed Reserve & Security):

The Role and Duty of the Additional Commissioner of Police (City Armed Reserve & Security):
Additional commissioner of Police (City Armed Reserve and Security) is in charge of all the units of City Armed Reserve (C.A.R) namely City Armed Reserve Head-quarters, City Armed Reserve (South) and City armed Reserve (North) each headed by a Deputy Commissioner of Police. He is assisted by three Deputy Commissioners of Police of City Armed Reserve.
In addition, he also looks after the matters associated with the security of V.I.P's. He is assisted in this regard by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Security)

ZONAL DEPUTY COMMISSIONERS OF POLICE

Deputy Commissioner of EAST ZONE:

The Area:
The East zone of Bangalore city cover an area of 104.5 square KMs comprising the Eastern part of the city. The zone comprises of posh localities commercial areas, Industrial area and several areas inhabited by middle and lower middle income groups.

Bangalore Airport, the busy commercial street the elite shopping area, the beautiful Ulsoor lake, the famous St.Mary's Church, Gurudwara of Sikhs, Ulsoor Someshwara Temple one of the Oldest temples in the city, the well laid out Russel market area are situated in this zone. In addition there are several establishments of the state and Central Government, the public sector concerns like the Indian Telephone Industries (ITI), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited(HAL), New Government Electric Factory (NGEF), corporate offices, Defence establishments and corporate offices are located in this zone.

There are four Assistant Commissioners of police in this zone with Headquarters at Airport, Ulsoor, Krishnarajapuram, and Frazer Town.

The people residing in this area have excellent rapport with the police and more than 2236 people are enrolled as members of Neighborhood Watch Scheme and has 92 prominent citizens as Special Police Officers.

HOYSALAS :

Deputy Commissioner Of Police West Zone:

The Area:

The West Zone of Bangalore City comprises of commercial and residential areas. All the activities of a metropolis can be seen here. This zone covers an area of 61.30 Sq.Kms. Chickpet, Balepet are busy commercial areas wherein gold, silver and garment shops are located. Gandhinagar, which houses majority of film producers, distributors, and theater comes under this zone.

The prominent institutions like National Law School of India University (NLSUI) campus of Bangalore University, Institute of Social and Economic Change (ISEC) and Sports Authority of India (SAI) are situated in this zone.

The residential areas of Basaveswaranagar, Vijayanagar, Chandra Layout are located in this zone. Important places of workship like Temples, Mosques and Churches are located in this zone.

There are three Assistant Commisioners of Police in this zone with their headquarters at Chickpet, Vijayanagar and Kengeri Gate.

The participation of citizens along with the police in patrolling has resulted in a phenomenal decrease in crime in this zone. This zone has enrolled 1874 citizens as members of "Neighbourhood Watch Scheme" and 192 as Special Police Officers.

The jansevak organisation is also active in this zone. Complaint boxes are maintained at strategic points the citizens drop their complaints, which are collected by the Police and these complaints are attended to.

A unique feature of this zone is the work done regarding the rehabilitation of street children and runway children. To rehabilitate such children a project called "Makkala Ashraya" was launched and a Transit Crisis Shelter is opened in Gandhinagar during January 1999. The Transit Crisis Shelter is run round the clock with the help of volunteers. Efforts are made to trace the parents of such children and restore them to their parents and where parents cannot be traced they are provided with vocational training by placing them 'with NGO's working for such children.

Deputy Commissioner Of Police Central Zone:

Central Zone of Bangalore City covers the heart of the City, and has an area of 48 Sq.kms. The Political Leaders, prominent officer of the State Government and the residences of VIPs are located in the area which include Raj Bhavan, Vidhana Soudha, General Post Office, Bangalore Palace, The High Court of Karnataka, Kanteerava Outdoor and Indoor Stadium, Karnataka Cricket Association Stadium. The Cubbon Park, with various species of plants and a variety of birds is located in this zone and is a major attraction for the tourists. The museums and the famous Indian Institute of Science is located here, apart from the busy commercial areas like Mahatma Gandhi road and Brigade Road, residential areas of Seshadripuram, Sadashivanagar, Vyalikaval.

Being a zone with the offices of important functionaries of the State Government, witnesses frequent rallies and demonstrations.

Prominent Clubs, Restaurants, Guest Houses, cultural centres, stadiums and commercial centres make this a lively zone.

This zone has three assistant Commissioners of Police with headquarters at Seshadripuram, Ulsoorgate and Cubbon Park.

Neighbourhood Watch Committee is active in this zone with around 650 citizens, 101 prominent citizens are appointed as Special Police Officers. Due to their continued support many offences are prevented.
