Vastu
for health, wealth and happiness: |
Ask a Vastu consultant and he will say, 'you cant charge your destiny. You can only lessen
the difficulties that you face by being prepared.'
Suresh Kumar, a Bangalore based garment merchandiser moved into a three story house in
Banashankari in 1992 but struggled to complete the construction for the next six years. In
1996, problems arose at work. Kumar's wife Neeta diagnosed the cause: the architecture of
the house. Three bathrooms, one on each floor, faced northeast a violation of the Vastu
principles. The Kumar's converted two bathrooms into studies for their sons Arun and Atul.
The third bathroom was converted into pooja room. Kumar says, "my problems have
almost disappeared and the business is looking up as well."
Praying before starting a business venture, trying a material knot, or simply before an
exam is out way to seek blessings from out elders, forefathers and the almighty before
embarking on these ventures that will have a bearing on out lives. Applying the principles
of Vastu to out lives and lifestyles is an extension of this custom.
Vastu shastra is an art and science that contains certain principles and practices of
constructing buildings. These principles endure a harmonious balance between man, nature
and his environment. This balance is said to result in better health, prosperity and
happiness. Many follow the Vastu tents that use both architecture and technology, to build
safe and happy homes.
But there are others who don't for various reasons, such as like lack of suitable urban
spaces, com. factors or they just do not believe in going through a lot of trouble just so
that a particular window or door faces a direction, which will be good for them. The
popular artist Yusuf Arakkal says, 'we discussed Vastu with out arctect so I'm sure he
built our home in Brooke Fields according to those principles. Though later, another Vastu
consultant who visited us told us to make a slight change, whereby we needed to have to
gateway at the opposite side of out front gate. We did that easily and things have been
fine with us'.
Vaishali Kasaravalli, a costume designer for films, says she cant afford to believe in
Vastu too much as 'we have so many limitations in terms of the size of the plot, the
location, and of course the living space itself.'
Vastu experts believe that there are affordable and easy ways to alter your living space
to suit you and your family. You can use the five elements, earth, space, air, fire and
water to your advantage. IT is also possible to harness the effects of the gravitational
and magnetic influences of the sun, moon, earth and other plants governing life on earth.
The idea is to bring about a harmony between yourself and the environment around you.
The sages who lived a long time ago would say, who wouldn't like to benefit from
knowledge, wisdom, health, weather and strength. In the final analysis, anyone planning to
construct a house would do well to remember a few basic the eight directions and their
importance before laying the first brick. And for those who already have homes in urban
sittings, flats and independent houses, try not to break and existing forms but alter and
modify a few structures in the convenient way. This is what Sunita Sehgal did when she was
told that the kitchen or fire source should face the southeast.' I could not break the
kitchen in my flat because it faced northwest. Breaking and relocating it would be messy.
I just ensured that the stove was placed in the right direction.'
So, go easy on those four walls and the position of your wind chimes. It you are
interested in gaining from the vast reservoir that is Vastu, find a reliable consultant,
pick up a few books as well and try and adopt the living space in your life.
