All the hype and hoopla culminates on this day when Die Another
Day has finally released. True to its predecessors, this Bond flick has everything in
order - an Aston Martin, women and a lot of edge of the seat stunts but one gets the
feeling that James Bond has somehow gone beyond the limits of probability and
believability.
This time the adventure starts in North Korea where Bond (Pierce Brosnan) is sent to get
rid of a rogue military leader Colonel Moon. As expected, a lot of explosions take place
and Moons second in command Zao (Rick Yune) gets his face embedded with diamonds. |
|
Eventually after a hovercraft
chase, Moon is assumed to be dead and Bond is captured, he ends up spending time in a
torture camp for the next 14 months. Suspiciously, he is traded with a now captured Zao
after British Intelligence assumes that Bond is spilling out secrets. |
Far from being welcomed back to MI6 he is treated like liablity. This means that Bond now
tries to get back at Zao whom he wishes to see dead. He follows his trail to Cuba where,
with the aid of gene therapy, Zao is trying to alter his looks. While in Cuba, Bond meets
Jinx (Halle Berry) who happens to be working for the NSA. Zao escapes to Britain and this
is where a trail leads Bond to Gustav Graves (Toby Stephens), a diamond dealer. Graves
invites Bond to the launch of Icarus, a satellite, that has a mirror on it that can
provide perpetual daylight but there is an evil purpose as well. When Bond finds Zao at
the scene he and Jinx try to kill Zao but end up finding the real identity of Graves and
Bonds MI6 ally Miranda (Rosamund Pike). This leads them back to North Korea trying
to avert a war, which they do successfully. |

Pierce Brosnan is still the ideal Bond despite the evidence of aging. The Bond girls are
spectacular and beautiful with Halle being the surprise package. She matches Bond stunt
for stunt. But Die Another Day has its failings. An awkward appearance by Madonna flags it
off. The villains have lost their evil aura since the old days of Bond and the fantasy of
adventure is not as powerful as before. Action is top of the line but the computer
graphics are too evident and dilute scenes to a large extent. Die Another Day is a must
see for all but Bond fans shouldnt be disappointed if they have that - it was better
in the old days - feeling. |
