Following in the footsteps of movies like
Bend it like Beckham comes a laugh riot called The Guru. The film is essentially about a
regular guy who dreams about going to the US, gets there and ends up being the Deepak
Chopra of sex. May not sound like the usual South Asian Diaspora movie but that is what
makes it special in a very unremarkable way.
Ramu Gupta (Jimi Mistry) has always dreamed of leaving Delhi and fulfilling his dreams of
being famous in the US. After hearing that his friend has a red Mercedes and a penthouse,
he convinces his parents that it is America or bust. Upon reaching there, he realises that
things are a bit different and that the Mercedes is actually a taxi and the penthouse is a

Indian theatre. He tries to get a job as an
actor but unknowingly ends up enrolling for a porn flick with co-star Sharonna (Heather |
Graham). He gets thrown out for not
performing (literally) and ends up back at his catering job but as luck would have it, he
has to end up playing a guru after one that was hired to amuse a crowd of socialites
passes out drunk. He preaches of liberation through sexual intercourse and this makes him
a hit, especially with Lexi (Marisa Tomei) a rich socialite in search of some
spirituality. He then becomes a hit with her friends and realises the financial potential
in being the guru of sex. He goes back to Sharonna to get more of her insights into sex
and uses the same spiel during his own sermons without her knowledge. Eventually, Ramu and
Sharonna start to get close but his cover gets blown and Sharonna wants nothing to do with
him but as all happy endings would have it, he ditches it all just to be with her. |

The Guru is a movie that deliberately goes into fits of absolute silliness. The kind of
silliness that makes children laugh uncontrollably and that is exactly what will happen to
anyone watching the movie. Heather Graham is the star of the show with her flexibility in
her role of a porn star and she definitely has done a good job of dancing to
Bollywoods atrocious choreography. Marisa Tomei is funny to a certain point
just like the rest of the cast. Unfortunately, Jimi Mistry is surprisingly mundane and
doesnt leave an impact. If you are in the mood for a silly comedy that doesnt
leave a lasting impression, The Guru is for you. |
