Director Sanjay Guptas Kaante, this years most-awaited film has finally
released. And no, its not a let-down despite the fact that it is inspired by the
Hollywood hit, Reservoir Dogs. In fact, the film is a path breaker of sorts in many ways.
A film far ahead of its time in terms of execution, Kaante is a visual delight. And
combined with good performances and superb action, its a must-see this season.
The film shot entirely in the U.S and starring six actors involved in a bank robbery had
Hollywood technicians working on it and it shows. The stunts are mind blowing and every
aspect of the film is exceptional. The story has six strangers coming together for a
mission- to rob a bank. But what they dont know is that one of them is a cop in
disguise. They have to trust each other but under that is a web of deceit.
The films treatment is novel so is the editing, which is very international. Even
though the script could have been tighter (especially the bank robbery), Gupta has managed
to keep the pace going. There are some genuinely funny moments between Sanjay Dutt
and Mahesh Manjrekar. The first half is lighter than the second because of the comic
scenes and superb dialogues, but overall the film manages to sustain the viewers
interest level.
Major (Amitabh), Ajju (Sanjay Dutt), Marc Isaak (Suniel Shetty), Andy (Kumar Gaurav),
Baali (Mahesh Manjrekar) and Mak (Lucky Ali) plan to pull off one gigantic heist, make
money and live the rest of the lives in luxury. Their target -- the Service Bank in LA,
which is less well guarded than others. How they go about their plan and what finally
happens to their ambitious plan makes up the climax of this film.
Technically, Kaante is one of Bollywoods brightest movies ever made. Neisha Folkes'
choreography, especially the pole number with Malaika Arora and Isha Koppikars item
song are well shot. The films music by Anand Raaj Anand is another winner. The only
things which could have been better are the script and screenplay, written by Sanjay Gupta
and Yash-Vinay.
But nevertheless, the climax when the identity of the undercover cop is revealed is
shocking and surprising. For the first time in his career, Gupta has managed to balance
technique and content equally. Also, hes managed to get brilliant performances from
his cast- especially Mahesh Manjrekar who is the best of the lot. His characterization
with its crudeness and stammering dialogues is a winner. After him comes Sanjay Dutt who
is very effective as a bank robber. Amitabh Bachchan is, as always, sincere and delivers
the goods well. For a change, Suniel Shetty has given a wonderful performance. The other
two actors, Kumar Gaurav and Lucky Ali dont have as much footage and lines but they
make an impact too. The only bad actor is Malaika Arora Khan who needs to stick to
dancing.
Overall, Kaante should do exceptionally well all over because of its novel content and
technique. The film has great production values, melodious music, wonderful performances
and most of all, it is very unlike the regular trash meted out by makers these days.
Its a wholesome entertainer and seeing the historic start the film has taken,
Bollywoods doom days are finally over. See it for a refreshing feeling, to know that
at last Hindi films have come of age. This Kaante has no thorns!
