Mathadaana....

Mathadaana

Movie:
Mathadaana
Direction: T.N. Seetharam.
Cast: Anantnag, Devraj, Tara, Hemant Hegde, Avinash, Mukhya Mantri Chandru and others.
Music: V Manohar and Ashwat.

After ‘Kanooru Heggadati’ (based on the novel of Kuvempu), which was selected for the Panorama, Aniketana Productions has this time come out with ‘Mathadaana’ based on the novel of another popular novelist Dr.S.L. Byarappa. Director T.N. Seetharam, who is proficient in political plays, has successfully directed the movie.

As the title itself suggests the movie focuses on the politics of votes. It is set in the post independent rural India which looks almost like a present day situation as some of our villages are still in that stage.

Ramalinge Gowda (Anant Nag) and Markande Gowda (Devraj) are two political opponents in a small village, who try all tricks to exploit the gullible villagers and grab their votes. Ramalinge Gowda is a charismatic character and is supporter of Putte Gowda (Sethuram). Markande Gowda is defeated thrice and is bent upon winning in the next election and he does win in the end. Lakshmi (Tara) daughter of Ramalinge

Anantnag

Gowda is in love with Shivappa, a principled man in the village. Unfortunately she ties the knot with someone else and leads a very unhappy married life. Her father Ramalinge Gowda also faces the debacle.

Tara

Thus ‘Mathadaana’ conveys a message about the value of individual votes in a democracy. At the same time it also gives a bird’s eye view of caste based politics and the society of rural India.

Locations and settings chosen perfectly match the subject. Cast is good and all the actors have justified their roles. Anant Nag, Devraj and Mukhya Mantri Chandru need special credit. The music composed jointly by V.Manohar and Ashwat is average. T.N. Seetharam has adapted the novel with some modifications and has convincingly directed the movie. It is produced with lot of grip on script and the theme. It is a good one.
