Rishtey seemed to have borrowed relations
from a number of melodramatic films. So much so that you wonder what exactly was Indra
Kumar, the director, all excited about?
The story revolves around Sooraj (Anil Kapoor) and his son, Karan. The child is brought up
believing that his mother Komal (Karisma Kapoor) is dead. A partial truth, since she gets
into diva-static mood, dons a black sari, violins et al and is ready to jump
off the terrace.
But before we know the reason for Sooraj and Komals split, we are subjected to a
Forrest Gump like |
|
scene where Karan with his polio afflicted
knees breaks off the braces while running in a race and emerges a winner. (Maybe this got |
the director excited). If thats not
enough, then Vaijanthi (Shilpa Shetty) a fisherwoman roams around swaying her
lissome figure and yakking away to glory, a la Sridevi of Hawa Hawaii fame.
Vaijanthi tries everything in the book to get Sooraj to salivate over her, but to no
avail. She tries the bharatiya nari number, karva chauth and the works only to be told
that she cannot take Komals place. Komal we learn is a rich mans (Amrish Puri)
daughter. Her father had never approved of the man she loved but Komal defied him and
married her sweetheart till her father put another stake in their happy hearts. |

Komal, intensely possessive of her man, is led to believe that her man has strayed and she
swears off him, not knowing that her |
|
father was behind it all and wants to even
kill their baby. Left with no alternative, Sooraj runs off with his son, and stays in a
chawl. Seven years have gone by, till Komal spots Sooraj with Karan. Shes adamant in
getting her son back.
From Raja Hindustani, she takes the track of Akele Hum Akele Tum. Her father challenges
Sooraj that in order to get back his son he has to arrange Rs. 15 lakhs in three months to
show that he was capable of bringing up his son without any financial problems. Sooraj
returns to the fighting arena as a boxer, which could prove quite fatal for him. The
climax becomes a mish-mash of Rocky and |

Bollywood melodrama.
Indra Kumars Rishtey would have been interesting if he had not settled on a
predictable track. The humour is very outdated, loud and crude. Its in the
second half that the film perks up and gets engrossing. But a few scenes later, things get
worse as it gets louder with every frame. Music does not make any impression.
The films lead cast is the only asset. Anil Kapoor is the only one in the film who

overboard. He plays his part with a lot of restraint and is
effective. Hes ably supported by his leading ladies, although they have nothing
exceptional to offer. Karisma does yet another intense role- vulnerable but constantly
battling her emotional gripes. As for Shilpa, she unabashedly displays her physical assets
and just the same goes over the top in performance too. Playing a sexy machchiwali, she
apes Sridevi to the hilt. In fact, Shilpa is likeable only in the second half where
shes shown as this outspoken lady with a heart of gold. Overall, Rishtey is one
relationship sure to be doomed if invested in, so stay away or take an aspirin with you to
sit through this boring fish-tale!
