The Legend Of Bhagat Singh...

Movie Review: The Legend Of Bhagat Singh
Starring: Ajay Devgan, Sushant Singh, Santosh, Amrita Rao, Raj Babbar and Farida Jalal
Producer: Ramesh & Kumar Taurani
Director: Raj Kumar Santoshi
Music: A.R. Rahman
Lyrics: Sameer
Genre: Patriotic

The movie tells the story of freedom fighter cum revolutionary Bhagat Singh, who toiled hard to free India. The movie also speaks

about a few instances of his life, his ideologies, the way he was tortured by the Britishers and his sacrifices.

Bhagat Singh (Ajay Devgan) is shown to be deeply moved by the Jalianwalla Bagh Massacre in Amritsar at the tender age of twelve. He takes a vow to fight against injustice and the Britishers.

He grows up to be an intelligent and popular youth in the college. His ideology attracts like-minded youth like Sukhdev (Sushant Singh) to him. In order to accomplish his mission, Bhagat Singh leaves home, his

loving mother (Farida Jalal) and his beloved (Amrita Rao).

Initially he participates in Mahatma Gandhi's 1921 Non Cooperation Movement but is thoroughly disillusioned by his principle of non

violence as that does not work against the British Government. So, he leaves Mahatma Gandhi and joins Bismillah (Ganesh Yadav) and Chandrashekhar Azad (Akhilendra Mishra). They plan the Kakoree train theft but unfortunately Bismillah and his group get caught. Thereafter, Azad joins Bhagat Singh and his group to form the Hindustan Socialist Republic Association. When Lala Lajpat Rai gets killed in the Simon Go Back morcha, the group get together to kill Assistant Superintendent of Police John Poyantz Saunders as retaliation. He along with B K Dutta bomb the Legislative Assembly to get arrested and the purpose of doing this is to spread the message of freedom across the country as well as the world. This act of Bhagat Singh served its purpose of threatening the Britishers who considered Bhagat Singh

dangerous and imprisoned him. Even in the prison, Bhagat Singh along with his group rebelled for human rights and fasted for more than a month. Ultimately, the British Government sentenced him to death and Bhagat Singh along with his friend were hung to death

on 23rd March 1931. Their bodies were then smuggled out of the prison for  cremation.

There is no doubt about the fact that the movie is indeed well done. Raj Kumar Santhoshi deserves a good amount of patting for making such a film without any flaws. The script is well researched and written. Dialogues by Piyush Mishra, Rajkumar Santoshi and Ranjeet Kapoor are light but clap-worthy. The first half of the movie is both moving and entertaining and the comic punches ease the tension in the drama. After interval, the film becomes boring and repetitive. Some emotional scenes are heart touching.

Performance-wise, all are at their best. Ajay Devgan in the role of the angry young Bhagat Singh is great and carries out his performance with ease. Sushant Singh does a marvellous job and his acting, expressions etc. deserve special mention. D. Santosh is

natural and his Maharashtrian accent will very much appeal to the Maharashtra crowd. Akhilendra Mishra enacts his part powerfully. Raj Babber, Farida Jalal, Amrita Rao, Mukesh Tiwari and others in the supporting cast are good. Surendra Rajan has the looks and mannerisms as Gandhi and is excellent.

Music by A.R. Rahman is good but nothing new or exceptional. The popular numbers are " Mere rang de", "Pagdi Sambhal Jatta" and "Des mere". Photography by K.V. Anand is superb.

Overall, the movie will be appreciated by only a section of the society rather than the mass.
