An autobiographical Movie Zubeidaa speaks the
story of a young lady of 1950s who tried to lead a life of her own like a free bird.
Director Shyam Benegal has chosen the subject of his caliber and handled it in a very
            subtle and intelligent manner. |

Riyaz (Rajit Kapoor), Zubeidaas son explores the story
of Zubeidaa, daughter of Suleman Seth (Amrish Puri). In his quest to find out the truth,
            he visits all |

those places and people with which his mother had
acquaintance.   Suleman Seth ties the wings of a girl who voices her desire to lead
an independent life. She even attempts to be a heroine, but her attempts prove futile.
Unable to face her stubborn father, she succumbs to the circumstance. Zubeidaa ties the
knot with a Man who is based in Pakistan. This ends in a Talak (divorce). Eventually she
is left with a baby with many of her dreams unrealized. |

                    Now
comes Aunt Rose (fathers friend) to rescue her from this situation. Ms. Rose brings
her in contact with Raja Vijayendra Singh of Fatehpur. Zubeidaa enters a totally new arena
from now. Blinded by his love, she comes under an illusion that she can get all that she
lost in her past, if she gets married to him. Will she get the freedom, she was craving
for or does she find her wings tied again, as Choti Rani, in the Royal family. The answer
                    is obvious.

treatment that has made the difference. Samir Chandas
Art direction and music by A.R. Rahman have made the movie even more special. Karishma
looks gorgeous. She looks as though she is made for the role. Manoj Bajpai, looks
uncomfortable in the role of Raja. Rekhas performance is convincing.

Shyam Bengal has proved his quality again. Zubeidaa remains in the minds of the audience
for quite sometime, even after they are out of the theatre. This speaks a lot about the
director ability. It is an impressive one. |
