Bring the puppy home. You must
give its Primary Vaccination against Parvo and other diseases. Remember to ask questions
about the feeding schedule from the breeder from whom you buy the dog.
Feeding Schedule:
Readymade dry food of high quality is available in India and if you can afford it, that is
the food of choice. Not only does it contain the right proportions of protein, fat and
carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, but it is also very convenient - no cooking is
required. On the other hand you may require commercial preparations of baby food, as
advised by the breeder. Remember to
give the right supplements of Calcium and Vitamins if you are not giving dry food.
Feeding:
Puppies are generally fully weaned by the time they are eight weeks old. To avoid upset
stomachs when you bring your puppy home, be sure to ask the breeder what the puppy has
been eating. Any changes made from that diet should be made very gradually. Whether you
choose to feed a good commercial diet or prefer to make your own extra vitamins or
supplements should only be given under the direct supervision of your veterinarian.
A puppy's energy and nutrient requirements is two to four times that of an adult dog of
the same breed until it reaches 50% of its adult body weight (usually 3-5 months of age).
It then decreases to one and a half times that of an adult dog until the puppy reaches 80%
of normal adult weight.
