Help your dog lead a worm-free life

Nearly all dog get parasitic worms at some point. The Signs of infection are difficult to spot and even animals that look like they are in perfect condidition carry them.

But some of these can cause health hazards to humans too. most internal parasites live in a dog's intenstines where they feed and reproduce. A veterinarian should examine all puppies for parasites. The common parasites are round worms and hook worms.

Round worms are pinkish white and curled like a thin coiled rope. They usually come out in the animals feces or vomit. Roundworms can cause mild vomiting and diarrhea.Roundworm larve can lie dormant in the muscle tissue of bitches and are activated during pregnancy. They infect the unborn young ones. Most pups are born with round worms. An animal can become very sick and even die if they carry heavy load of worms.

Tapeworms are long strips made of flat segments filled with eggs that break off from the worm in the body . These segments can come out one at a time. Common sings of tapeworms are small dried agg-sacs like rice grains in feces. Dogs are never born with tapeworms, but can pick them up.

All adult dogs should be dewormed regularly, say every three months. Bitches should be de-wormed before they mate and never during pregnancy. De-worming in puppies can be started at the age of two weeks and you can have a healthy pet.
