The bespectacled, soft spoken leg spinner was a much under-rated bowler till
he reached the perfect 10 in the Test match against Pakistan at Delhi during February
1999. A 'hero' who has won many matches for India with his unorthodox leg spin bowling -
which is more of a fastish variety with a lot of bounce, Kumble has been an integral part
of the Indian bowling attack for the past few seasons. An engineer from R.V. College of
Engineering, Bangalore, Kumble became the second person in the history of Test cricket
(after Jim Laker of England) to take 10 wickets in an innings. Interestingly, Bangalore's
A.V. Jayaprakash officiated from the end in which the 29-year-old Kumble claimed all his
wickets. A unique double indeed for Bangalore.
