Woman of the month

Biba Bhusri.....

Biba Bhusri

Biba Bhusri is a saviour for all would-be mothers....

Her classes on childbirth are meant to allay fears of parents-to-be. The heartening thing is that fathers play an important role in these classes.

OFTEN, COUPLES expecting a baby are flooded with advice from all quarters. The tales are many and long, and if it happens to be the first baby, they could get very confusing. Professional counselling in such circumstances could be of help.

And it is precisely this anxiety that Biba Bhusri, a counsellor for childbirth, helps address.

Her "Get set natural childbirth course" is attended by women pregnant for 28 to 32 weeks. Fathers also join in.

The course begins with a standard programme which covers aspects relating to birth of the first child. Biba also offers a crash course on childbirth, a six-hour intensive session.

A refresher course is offered for couples who have completed the standard course on birth of the first child, and would like to go through the course again in case of a second child.

The course provides detailed information on the process of labour and delivery, and conducts group discussions on hospital stay, and on bringing the baby home. The participants are also given a complete list of essentials to be taken to the hospital, and of requirements in the baby's first month. There is also an outline of breathing techniques, and exercises for the mother.

Fathers-to-be are an important part of the course. They are advised to visit the hospital and to talk to the staff before the delivery. Husbands are also trained to guide their wives through the breathing and check on the rhythm followed.

The course, costing Rs. 1,000 per couple, involves a holistic approach.

The course also brings to light methods by which the delivery of the child could be made less painful. Biba points out that the Lamaze method is one such.

The method involves breathing techniques that ease labour pains. Biba explains that this method of natural child birth was first developed by Dr. Ferdinand Lamaze, a French scientist, who would use "Psychoprophylaxis" as part of the method. "Psychoprophylaxis is to protect the mind from fear of the unknown, and we try to help couples by eliminating fears around childbirth. It involves knowing of all that will happen to you in labour."

Biba learn this technique from an American couple. Happy with the outcome, Biba decided to create awareness on the benefits of the method. (Incidentally, Biba has had three children by natural childbirth.)Gradually, many people approached her for training.

Though getting husbands and wives together to attend the course is a tough job for her, Biba gets her reward when her "graduates" acknowledge the benefits.

Ms. Bhusri, who advises expecting couples to read-up on childbirth: "Each birth is unique. Scary stories from friends and family have to be discouraged."

Biba can be contacted on 5538441.
