Smt. V.S.Rama Devi was born on January 15, 1934 at Chebrolu and
had her education at Eluru and Hyderabad. She obtained M.A and LL.M. degrees and became an
eminent advocate in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh. She held many positions in the Civil
Services of the central government. Important among them are Member Secretary to Law
Commission, Chief Election Commissioner and Secretary-General of Rajya Sabha. She has
served as Judicial member of Gold (Control) Appellate Tribunal. She has received many
national and international Honors and awards. |
She has visited important countries all over the world as a member of various Delegations
and Institutions. She had actively participated in Inter-Parliamentary Conferences held at
Canberra, Paris, Copenhagen, Bucharest, Istanbul and Beijing.
She has also participated in Inter-Parliamentary Counsels Special Session at New
York. She has worked as a member of various professional associations including the
prestigious Statute Law Society, London.
She also has interest in Telugu literature and has written some novels, short stories,
essays and plays in Telugu. She has written on legal topics like women and law, children
and law, handicapped and law, defection law and certain other constitutional aspects. Her
special interest is to spread legal awareness among women and weaker sections of society.
She has special interest and care for environment. She is a voracious reader.
She served as Governor of Himachal Pradesh from July 26, 1999 to December 2, 1999. She has
been Governor of Karnataka and Chancellor of Universities in Karnataka since December 2,
1999.
