Badal |

"Badal" deals with the problem of terrorism particularly in parts of Northern
India like Punjab and Haryana. Frankly the Director has not taken the issue of terrorism
in its entirety, but deals with it in an hackneyed fashion without going into details.
There is an element of sentiment in the story which are good in parts, but the Director
and the Story writer seem to be more interested in leading the proceeds to mayhem and
murder in the climax. There is also a senior politician who would like to bring the
situation under control by touring and talking to the people of terrorism infested areas,
but even that issue is taken lightly. More prominence is given to the gory shootouts and
fights. There is also a love element here as otherwise the heroine Rani Mukherjee would
have no work. The human relations angle is given priority, what with the hero, played by
Bobby Deol, who is a notorious terrorist and also carries a reward on his head falls for
the bonds of family and that too of a highly motivated and ideal police officer.

Badal (Bobby Deol) sees his own family being
wiped out in a shooting encounter with Police Inspector Jai Singh Rana (Ashutosh Rana).
Years later, Badal becomes a dreaded terrorist and loots a bank. He is instructed to take
the booty to Sundar Nagar where he comes into contact with a good natured police officer.
He takes refuge in the police officer, but his aim remains to kill the treacherous
police officer who had killed his parents and his loving sister. But the good police
officer and his family members give him a new lease of life |

and makes him understand the value of sentiments and human
relations. After several twists
and turns he meets the
treacherous Senior Officer who has now become a DIG. Now, he is in a big racket having
connections with traitors and foreign nationals who want to destabilise India. How the
hero accomplishes his revenge forms the rest of the story.
The music is a big let down. The comedy elements are also ordinary. Johnny Lever is
becoming repetitive. Bobby Deol looks good but he should still improve his diction and
emotions. Rani Mukherjee has nothing much to do in the film, except to participate in song
and dance sequences. Amrish Puri excels in his role. Ashutosh Rana proves once again that
he is a good villain.
As a film "Badal" is very ordinary. |
