Movie Review: Lagaan
Cast: Aamir Khan, Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelly, Kulbhushan Kharbanda

Lagaan talks about a drought stricken place under the
British Empire, who have imposed a double tax to all |
|
the farmers inspite of no rain. The villager's pleas and
protest is conveyed to the the sympathysing yet helpless Maharaja(Kulbhushan Kharbanda). A
verbal duel commences between the hot headed villager Bhuvan(Aamir Khan) and the British
Captain Russel . This leads to a challenge of Cricket match between the vilagers and the
Britishers. The condition is, if the villagers win the match, they will be exempted from
taxes(Lagaan)for 3 years, and if they lose it they will have to pay triple. Now, the
problem is teaching the rural group a match like cricket which is an entirely new game for
them. |
|
Miss.Elizabeth(Rachel Shelly), comes to their rescue and gets a cleansweep seeing Bhuvan
whereas Bhuvan is already in love with Gauri(Gracy Singh. Bhuvan the ever optimist young
man has hardly any followers but slowly he makes them to realise their own potential and
then forms an team of 11, ready to face the Britishers. This group is a wonderful mix of
all religions,cast,color,creed..even a handicap spinner. Bhuvan makes them identify their
potential and assures them that as a united group, they will succeed for sure. And they
do...........

All happens in a span of 3 hour 40 minutes which is a bit
too long for audiences who are used to a 3 hourly movie.
Lagaan comprises of a highly sincere set of Indian
actors who form the back drop of this village. The village looks quite realistic.Wonderful
set of |

clothes and settings,the ambience,the rustic language,the sheer energy,effort and
honesty of the movie comes out throughout and maintains a continuty in the movie. The
British Actors have done their job convincingly.Gracy Singh, as a hindi film actress is
simply convincing and natural. Rachel Shelly is very |
|
refreshing and induces a warmth to her role. The
choreography and music are just too good. Aamir khan and the director Ashutosh Gowariker
have done a brilliant job. A lumpsum of 25crores and a time span of 2years has been spent
in producing this megahit.
Lagaan can be termed to be excellent from all aspects. A must see for everyone.
