Archana Hande |
Archana situates her
prints predominantly in a language of fantasy. Even before oft - recurring motifs
like the crowned riders mounted on grimacing quadrupeds appeared in her work, the images
were suffused with a dream-like ambience of strange shadows and diffused light.
While the Technical possibility of overlapping plates in the printing process link up with
the transparent layers of memory or the telescoping of moments in dream, the dream-world
also configures the elements of her compositions. The array of aeroplanes echo in the
school of fish, with no distinct demarcation between the two spaces. Directional
uniformity of fish or flying shapes then read as the insistence of repeated motifs, while
the feeling of movement translates in to speed. |

Repetition and recurrence take another cue from architecture, as it occurs in arched
openings and grouped minarets. Subsequently as Archana turns them into
less-identifiable 'pure' shapes she also emphasizes the vertical in the process. As
the domed minaret transforms into distinctly phallic shape, it leads one to infer possible
sexual undertones in the image. What may have been subliminal in the initial stage,
later becomes consciors explanation. This then can be read back on to the forms of
the aeroplane and the fish. An interesting shift comes in the later images, where
the previous proliferation of the vertical threat and the horizontal thrust take the form
of the spiral, caught up in perpetuating circles. The act of playing with forms then
no longer remain simply innocent. |
