Are you stressed out? Do you feel tired and irritable? Are
your relationships at work and home taking a nosedive? Does your past or your future haunt
you?
If the answer to all these is yes what you need to do is enrol yourself in The 'Art
of Living' programme which has been founded by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Based on scientific
techniques, this programme helps you cope with life's stresses as well as overcome
ailments.
According to Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, many of our ailments are due to faulty breathing
techniques. To set this right, he has developed a series of breathing techniques, which
ensures that your body is getting an adequate supply of oxygen. These breathing techniques
are called Sudarshan Kriya and have to be learnt from a qualified person.
Incredible as it may sound, these techniques have been used at NIMHANS to help cure
patients and the programme has also been introduced in jails with remarkable results. It
has helped calm down belligerent convicts.
COURSE OPTIONS
Under the programme there's a basic course which is an easy-to-practise workshop of
18 hours, spread over 6 days. This course helps you cope with dayto-day stresses.
Under this programme Sudarshan Kriya is taught to help deal with your emotions and to get
rid of negative feelings.
Besides this there is a course for professionals which is a 16 to 18 hour course
that helps increase productivity, creativity, awareness and self-fulfilment.
There is a higher course, the advanced meditation course for which the basic course
is essential. This course also covers meditation and is spread over 5 to 7 days. While all
the other courses are conducted in groups in a hall, the advanced course is a residential
one and is conducted in the ashram.
The programme has also developed courses for children in the age groups of 5 to 7,
8 to 14 and 15 to 17. Under this, children are taught stretching exercises, yoga,
pranayam, creative projects, service-oriented projects, group dynamics, leadership
training, problem solving strategies and development of social skills. This programme is
called Art Excel and is held at training camps over periods of 4 to 5 days.
VOLUNTARY WORK
The fees for these courses vary from place to place and 60 per cent of this is
diverted to community development programmes called the 5H Action Plan. This covers
health, hygiene, harmony in diversity, homes and human values. Under these schemes
education is provided free of cost for village children. Houses are built, borewells have
been sunk and a host of such programmes have been undertaken.
