Homeopathy for Children

Homeopathy follows a holistic approach to the treatment of diseases and it has been found to be particularly effective in the case of little children. This line of medicine follows a flexible method of treatment and so people suffering from similar are often treated with different sets of medicines.

Dr. Latha Devarajan has been practising homeopathy for the past several years and has a large number of patients, many of who are children. One of the first things she does is to take down a history of all your ailments. Besides this she makes a note of the patient's demeanour as well as emotional state. So she'll ask you if your child enjoys going out, if she loves chocolates and if she cries a lot.

She says children don't have to suffer the trauma of taking allopathic medicines because they love the sweetness of homeopathic pills and powders. What's more, small children don't have a history of strong medicines and so react positively to the medicines quickly. These medicines, unlike allopathic medicines, do not pump the body with drugs that lower the resistance level of the body.

According to Dr. Devarajan what it does is to stimulate the body and help it to increase its resistance to deal with the diseases and heal itself.

It is often believed that homeopathy is very slow in treating diseases. But, says Dr. Devaraja , with the right dose and right timing, diseases can be brought under control within 24 to 48 hours.

She says the most common problems she has to deal with are viral infections, gastrointestinal problems, tonsillitis, bronchitis, amoebiasis and viral diarrhoea. She has also handled challenging cases of hyperkinetic children, kidney disorders like nephrotic syndrome and eczema's.

It is not enough to merely diagnose and medicate the child to cure it of its ailment. She says there is a definite need to understand the mental make-up of the child and help it emotionally, as well, to recover.

A few points should be kept in mind when your child's on homeopathy.

  • This system takes time and don't expect immediate results. Let the remedy run its course.
  • Avoid the use of camphor, menthol, eucalyptus, mint and coffee. These are often found in cough syrups and have a counter effect on homeopathic medicines.
  • Make sure that your child does not put anything in his mouth for at least 20 minutes after taking the medicines.
  • The medicines should be put either on or under the tongue to dissolve and they should be put directly into the mouth.
  • Try avoiding the use of two different remedies simultaneously.

You could also keep a stock of the following medicines for everyday use.

  • Arnica montana for bruises/ injuries from falls and accidents.
  • Leduc for insect bites, puncture wounds.
  • Hypericum for injuries to nerves, toes and fingertips.
  • Rhus toxicodendron for sprains and strains.
  • Arsenicum album for food poisoning, vomiting and diarrhoea.
