Some ideas to reduce overall food bill... |
Consider buying in bulk: Prices per kilogram are usually better when buying
larger quantities but do the maths. Meat, fruit and vegetables are fairly consistently
cheaper when bought in bulk. Sometimes though, buying in larger quantities doesn't pay.
Bulk buying only works where there is sufficient storage space, the product doesn't spoil
before it's all used, and it is something you will actually use. You also need to be
prepared to allocate sufficient time and resources at the front end of the process to
ensure that the food is stored correctly.
Buy fruit and vegetables in season: Learn what fruit and vegetables are
in season at the different times of the year. Within reason, it is usually the time when
prices are at their lowest. Growing your own also helps and you also know what you are
getting.
The most commonly used ways to preserve food are |
Preserving, also known as canning in some countries.
Dehydrating or drying.
Pickling.
Freezing.
