Introduction:
Pattadakal is a small village on the banks of the river Malaprabha Under the Chalukyas it
reached the peak of prosperity during the 7th and 9th centuries. The sculpture on the
pillars and panels throw considerable light on the social life of the early Chalukyas.
The temples of Pattadkal continue the process of evolution from Aihole, to the more common
forms of Hindu temple sculpture. Pampanath temple is representative of Chalukyan and
Virupaksha of Dravidian culture. The sculpture consists of pilasters, pillars, balconies,
pierced work and high-relief faces of the towers. |
