First Among Equals
Jeffery Archer
This is probably Archers best political novel till date. It gives us a insight into the
British political system from 1964 till 1991 like no other novel till date.
This novel is extremely informative and realistic due to Archer's political
background. He was a member of the Conservative Party and was also its General Secretary
in 1987 after which he resigned from the party.
This novel is based around four central characters. Andrew Fraser who is from a
very sporting background and whose father serves as a Tory member but he chooses to join
the Labour party. Raymond Gould, a Yorkshire butcher's son whose one driving ambition in
life is to become Prime Minister.
Charles Seymour, an aristrocrat who just missed out on inheriting his family
fortune being born 9 minutes after his brother. His aim in life is to make up for it by
doing something that he earns on his own.
Simon Kerkslake, a man who's father passed away early and since then has done everything
on his own, a man who is totally self- made.
The book deals with these four men coming from vastly different Backgrounds with
only one common ambition, the burning desire to become Prime Minister.
The book is very unique because it delves right into the very depths of British
politics without the reader losing track of the story .It is also a superb book because
the reader has no idea of the outcome until the last line of the book.
