In a typical story of
'rags to riches', P. Anil Kumar has today become the top star of Indian athetics by making
the 100 metres sprint record his very own. Son of a poor tailor from Kerala, Anil Kumar
came down to Bangalore to join the Madras Engineering Group and Centre. Initially training
for decathlon, Anil Kumar changed tracks at the behest of the MEG coach Balakrishnan. The
move quickly paid dividends as Anil Kumar took to the sprint with a lot of liking and
despite the lack of adequate exposure in terms of international participation, added the
100 metres mark to his name in a strong field at Chennai during the circuit meet in June
1999. This Bangalore-based athlete now aspires to qualify for the Sydney Olympics
scheduled to be held later this year. |
