Shilpa Sequeira,
a second degree commerce student at the Mount Carmel College, is the cynosure as the most
promising athlete of Karnataka. Shilpa specialises in long jump, triple jump and is also a
heptatlete. At 19 years of age she has bagged medals at the junior athletics and all-India
university championships. She also performed creditably at the Federation Cup in the
under-20 category. She is all set to graduate to the senior category and her sights are
set on the forthcoming Open nationals scheduled to be held in the month of October.
"Though making it good at the senior level is no easy task, I am training hard to
attain the timing necessary to make it good in the category. My timing at the practice
stints are pretty good and with more hard and dedicated training I should come good by the
time the Open nationals arrive," Shipa Sequeira told online Bangalore in an exclusive
interview. |

Shilpa also intends to complete her graduation and there after hopefully secure a
job on sports quota in one of the many institutions that promote sports. "As of now
my mind and sights are fixed on performance in order to make it to the top and the thought
of a job is a good two years away. In another two or three years I should be able to make
it to the big league," she said. Hailing from Dakshina Kannada region she is a talent
spotted initially from the Deccan Athletic Club's weekend athletics meet and is now
training under V.R. Beedu. She has had a coaching stint under coach Rai before she
switched over to train under Beedu as the former had to move over due to transfer.
"I have very encouraging parents, which is going to help me go a long way with my
sport," she said. Apart from having encouraging parents she said, "I have an
excellent coach, who provides very good training programmes." So she sees a bright
future ahead of her under the able supervision of her coach Beedu.
