Gopichand is the next star in the Indian men's badminton horizon to follow in the
footsteps of legendary Prakash Padukone. Though Gopichand may not have risen to the dizzy
heights to which Prakash ascended by winning the All-England and World Badminton
Championships, Gopichand is the flag bearer of the Indian men's badminton in the 20th
Century. The current national champion, Gopichand has also won the Saarc gold medal and
achieved a career best world ranking of 26 in 1999. The 27-year-old Gopichand overcame a
terrible knee injury earlier in his career and has been in the fore front of leading the
Indian challenge in the men's events.
