  A Legend........ S a d h a n a

Sadhana was born in 1941,in karachi , and named after her father's favorite actress : Sadhana Bose.

She spent her early life seeped in film culture. The family fled from Karachi during Post Partition riots. Although they encountered difficult times , their daughter was allowed to see as many as two films a week.

In 1960 she made her debut with India's first Sindhi film  : Abana.

She was paid a token of Rs. 1 for the film, but it was a short leap from there, when Subodh Mukherjee (one of India's leading producers at that time) offered her the lead role in 'LOVE IN SIMLA' ,in 1960, opposite his newcomer son : Joy Mukherjee. The film was a great success and Sadhana became a big star overnight.

She then went on to become one of the biggest stars in Indian Cinema history, giving Hit after Hit in many memorable movies.

She was known to work in female oriented movies or atleast movies with a strong female role, and was always experimenting with new roles and styles.

In the movie : Hum Dono (1961) she got her hair cut in Audrey Hepburn's style, and the 'Sadhana Fringe' as it came to be called caught on like wildfire for the next decade or so!

Sadana

She also started the trend of the churidar pyjama and kameez with saleem shai in the movie : WAQT (1965). This trend also lasted for 6-7 years.

Of her 25 odd releases, atleast 19 were super hits, many of them still remembered as all time classics such as : waqt, mera saya , hum dono, asli naqli, mere mehboob, ek musafir ek hasina, raaj kumar, woh kaun thi , arzoo , and many many more.

She was also identified with hit mystery suspense thrillers (mostly directed by Raj Khosla) and was consecutively cast in three films : woh kaun thi , mera saya , anita.

In 1966 she married her young ' Love in Simla ' director RK NAYYAR.There marriage was a happy one and lasted for 25 years or so till his death in the early 1990s. They did not have any children.

Soon after her marriage she encountered a few health problems , mostly related to her Thyroid. She was taken to Boston for treatment and recovered. She did work again after her illness and even gave some more hits, but seemed tired and soon retired with a huge hit : Geeta Mera Naam , while still in her prime , never doing 'old mother' roles .

She is still many peoples most favourite indian actress and recently on a poll in the indian magazine : filmfare was remembered as one of the most popular all time indian actresses along with waheeda rehman and sharmila tagore.
